refresh rates for Samsung Galaxy S22 + and S22 Ultra explained

There is a lot of confusion surrounding the Galaxy S22 system and the refresh rate of its screens. We are reviewing the S22 + and S22 Ultra and want to share our experience to test and clarify what Samsung PR is not capable of.

Let's start with the government's statement. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra screen has a refreshing change from 1Hz to 120Hz. The Galaxy S22 and S22+ cover only the 48-120Hz band. This is the latest statement from the company after the publication of various figures. The problem is that if the first digit is wrong, it is not new.

Before moving on, we need to know the difference between the refresh and average rates. They are usually paired but not available, especially on an S22 phone. An A-frame rate refers to the number of times a GPU sets a new frame rate. The refresh rate is how often the application takes the photo and then shows it to you. We reviewed the Android 12 support APIs on the Galaxy S22 + and S22 Ultra and found that their bars can restore power at the following times: 10Hz, 24Hz, 30Hz, 48Hz, 60Hz, 96Hz, and 120Hz. Anyway, after a day of testing, we are done. I have not seen the S22+ run at 10Hz. We've seen it run at 24Hz, though. Yes, 24Hz, lower than Samsung announces in public. About Ultra and why it does not record 1Hz, we will get to that later.

The actual rate at which a UI is made is related to but not the same number mentioned above. To test this, Samsung has installed an awesome tool in the Developer menu called GPU Watch, which reveals a cover for Android SurfaceFlinger products and graphics storage. In other words, it is an FPS counter rather than a refresh rate setting for display.

We saw the S22+'s UI drop to 1 fps while displaying vertical images. The refresh rate of the screen is higher, usually at 24Hz. "Normally," but not always, because the refresh rate coincides with what is running on the phone if you interact with it.

Working on UI 24Hz

We found that the S22 + handles its screen refresh rate well during our test. The basic idea is that every time you interact with the screen, the refresh rate goes up immediately to 120Hz for the best response. When you leave the phone alone, the refresh rate flies immediately to the appropriate position as it fits into the frame per minute of what is happening on the screen.

The lowest refresh rate obtained from the idle screen and vertical image is 24Hz. At the same time, the Android SurfaceFlinger reads at as low as one fps. This allows the GPU to sleep more often, reducing power consumption even if the display provides more power than usual.

Besides, the phone app works well, which matches the refresh rate of the display and the average rate of what is happening on the screen. Vertical images are displayed at 24Hz (for example, sitting on a home screen without user interaction). This frequency is usually set at 60Hz to accommodate motion if an application is running.

While this may work well, we have found that autodetect does not always make the most sensible choice. This is most commonly seen in web browsers (and embedded in third parties), which we cannot run at 120Hz. All our tests fell on 60Hz without touching the screen. This is easily tested by running the beautiful UFOs of BlurBusters.

The browser operates at 60Hz.

Also, we cannot imagine many real situations where the browser will give more than 60fps without interacting with the screen so that Samsung can make the right choice. When playing a video, the refresh rate control is very sensitive and adjusts the frequency per minute of the video being played. Play 24fps short videos on the S22+ intelligent display at 24Hz. 30fps produces results at 30Hz and 60fps at 60Hz, so you get the key. We have not stumbled upon this, but it works well.

Even better, we have found that this practice exists and works well when streaming local videos and when streaming videos on YouTube or Netflix.
